Photographing Humpback Whales of Maui

10

There is a special time each year on Maui when I get to spend time with some old friends, the Humpback Whales. Between Christmas and Valentine’s Day is the height of our whale season. More than a thousand of the giant, magnificent creatures come hang out, frolic, give birth, and mate in the warm, near-shore waters of Maui.

I have become rather comfortable carrying my camera and lenses out in my kayak to go photographing humpback whales of Maui up close. Some days are magical as newborne calves approach me quietly with curiosity while the 65-foot mom keeps a close eye. Other days are active with breaching, tail-slapping, and fin-waving. It can be a life-changing experience to witness these animals up close. And wow, when a male begins to sing itʻs song under the kayak! The sound reverberates and surrounds me up on the surface. I have many stories to tell.

For the hearty and adventurous photographer looking for something new, I am happy to bring you out with me in my kayak.
