Panoramics Of Maui
There is a saying: Maui No Ka 'Oi...Maui is the best! My panoramic images of Maui capture your favorite places on this magical island, as your eye naturally views them. By applying my culturally sensitive eye to these special wahi pana or sacred places, and combining it with uniques angles and perspectives, you can sense the emotion in the finished piece.
Shooting on traditional film, I created these the hard way -- or, at least the “old-school “ way. My bulky camera is difficult to backpack with. It is a medium format Fujifilm 617cm, and the heavy tripod is a must. The majority of this collection was captured with Velvia 50 ISO Film. I can only create four shots per roll with this unique camera, and so I would compose carefully and intently.
The artwork in this collection may be packaged to suit your personal taste. Prints ordered on acid-free watercolor paper will be center-mounted on black foamboard. Koa wood framing is available. Artwork ordered on canvas will be expertly stretched. Remember that our guaranteed safe shipping is absolutely free on all orders shipped within the United States!

"Where Old Surfboards Go... " #503
Ha'iku, North Shore, Maui -- This fence has become a well-known landmark on the North Shore between Jaws and Ho'okipa Beach. My estimate is that there are about 250 used surfboards surrounding this property!

"Secret Beach" #402
Pa'ako, Makena, Maui. The ever-so-popular, and tiny wedding beach in Makena. Some call it "The Cove"; some call it "Secret Beach"; I call it Pa'ako, because that what the old maps call this location. What ever you call this slice of paradise, it is incredibly beautiful and incredibly hard to find, unless you are looking.

Deep in the forest of Kipahulu, the bamboo comes to life early on a windy morning. Shouldn't this be in you home?

"Blue Pond" #437
Helele'ike'oha Stream, Hana, Maui. This once-secluded pool is now accessible by invitation only. After the cool water falls from the mountain into this pool, the next plunge is directly into the ocean. It is Earth's gift to us.

"'Iao Valley, Maui" #444
This is one of the best Black & White images I have ever created -- and not easily! I stood in the middle of Kinihapai Stream for an hour; the round rock was actually about 24 inches from my camera. I bracketed my f64 exposures quickly as water was splashing on my lens. This was one of my final "film" shots. I am really proud of this image; and the location is magical!

"Ualani's Sunset " #454
This special person is friend to all living things. Ua is a hula teacher, a mentor, and a living treasure. I photographed her as she insisted; on the beach in black & white. Afterwards, this magic happened with the sunset and my large panoramic camera!

Haleakala Crater, in Haleakala National Park. The scene changes minute by minute in the crater -- from desert inferno to snow-showers to the perfect day... Hikers must be prepared for anything!

"Koi Flurry" #498
Every "Local" knows how fun it is to go visit the Japanese Koi pond at the Makena Prince Resort. The hundreds of Koi will literally swim on to dry land to get a bite of fish food from your hand. This slow camera exposure brings the fish into an artistic, and almost "painted" image.

"Oneloa - Big Beach" #511
A favorite of Maui residents, this long stretch of white sand leads into crystal clear water; perfect for swimming, but occasionally the enormous, and dangerous waves bring the island's top body-boarders here for the perfect thrill-ride! This is one of my very first digital images -- and a very fine one too.

"Plethora Of Plumerias" #499
Plumeria flowers grow anywhere and everywhere in Hawaii. They blossom in bunches upon beautifully-shaped plumeria trees in many different colors.

"Heavenly Hamoa" #520
Earnest Hemmingway called this the "perfect beach". I have to agree with Earnest. This photo is a digital, taken from the rocky North end. One hundred yards of golden sand lures guests from around the globe. There is a feeling of "old Hawai'i" here, as the beach-boy oversees his visitors.

"Precocious Pineapples" #450
One day I decided to get a couple of pineapples at Costco and photograph them. I wasn't satisfied, so I bought a couple more up at the Pukerette (Pukalani Superette) . Still wanting a different look, I went to Down to Earth and got a couple of organics. Finally, I decided to do the "old-school thing" and just walk into one of the local fields and pick a couple of the smaller hybrids. Oops, I got cought by a field worker! However, the old Filipino man was so nice, that he helped me select the best from his field! The pineapple lineup photographed perfectly with my panoramic camera and has sold wonderfully as a large canvas for home decor. After all, in Hawai'i, the pineapple is a symbol of hospitality, or "Ho'okipa".

"Beach Chairs " #516
Po'olenalena Beach, Makena, Maui, is one of the few beaches that has been left un-changed through the years. It is clean, peaceful, and thankfully a bit hard to find.
I love this beach! In the cove on the right, a couple of beach chairs were left empty as perfect props for this sunset image.

"The Lei Maker" #448
Kaipo and I were weaving a few extra palapalai fern leis at the stream in 'Iao Valley, prior to her hula. I took advantage of the opportunity to capture this moment in black & white. After darkroom-printing the original, I hand-tinted selected parts of this popular image. Kaipo now teaches hula in California, but her roots are deep in UpCountry Maui.

"Nature's Canvas" #532
On the long and winding road to Hana, Maui, there are a variety of exotic plants , flowers, and trees. One of my favorite trees is the "painted" rainbow Eucalyptus. The morning sun was hitting this tree trunk, while a thick branch passed in front. Each piece of peeling bark reveals a new vivid hue.

"Stream Of Tranquility, Seven Pools " #524
This image was created at dusk at the famous "Seven Pools" of 'Oheo Gulch in Kipahulu, Maui. I used a long exposure; perhaps 30 seconds. I love the intensely green ferns hidden under the lava ledge. If I had photographed this scene during the daylight, the ferns would be hidden in shadow, and the water would look too harsh and crisp for my own taste.

"After The Rain" #404
This island panorama shows the "Valley Isle" at it's finest. I went out one clear Sunday morning hoping to capture this exact image -- no wind, scattered clouds, and a new layer of emerald grass following a heavy rain. In fact this was the first drenching rain after a four-year dry-spell on Maui. This was taken from the grounds of Ulupalakua Ranch; a 22,000 acre haven above Wailea, Maui.

Yep, this is "Little Beach", Makena, from a different angle at a different time of day. Our ever-popular nude beach is naked from people at 6:45am. "Alau Island" #406
Near the tiny Hawaiian village called Hana, Maui, there is an island. Many tales are told about this red, rocky mound emerging from the water in front of Koki Beach. A handfull of perfect coconut trees sprout from the peak, and enormous birds glide gracefully in circles above. I have numerous images of this tiny islet. This is one of the few images I have created during the harsh mid-day light. My polarizing filter enhanced the blue hues and sharpness of this image.

"The Waters Of Venus Pool" #522
There is a hidden pool near Hana Town, between Pohakuloa and Maka'alae, where the water is deep and the color of the water changes across from left to right. There are jumping ledges as high as 35 feet from which local kids plunge fearlessly. The pool spills directly into the deep Pacific. This pool is among Maui's finest treasures.

"Locals Only" #465
For local Hawai'i folks, there are the two basic brands of footwear -- "Locals" slippers, and "Surfas" slippers. This was the lineup outside my front door one day. If we have to go to a wedding or funeral, we wear the all black color; otherwise we grab whatever size comes remotely close to fitting, no matter what color! I love this image!

"The Sands Of Ka'uiki " #521
The misty light rain of Hana can be seen coming off from the ocean to gently surround and embrace Hana Bay with rainbows. An ancient legend of two lovers here reveals a story of Maui - the demi god, and how his daughter Noenoe fell in love with a young man named Ka'uiki who was an adopted son of the Menehunes. The Menehunes protected him as they thought of him a gift of Kanaloa - the sea god. However, these lovers knew they couldn't be together forever as Ka'uiki would have to return to the sea. Noenoe pleaded to her father to use his magical powers to keep them together. Maui reluctantly turned Ka'uiki into a high hill overlooking Hana Bay and Noenoe into her namesake - the misty rain. To this day, Noenoe can be seen coming off the ocean to gently surround and embrace Ka'uiki Hill at Hana Bay.

"Wailua Falls" #479
A few miles past Hana, Maui, the road goes from very narrow to extremely narrow. This is my favorite road on the entire planet. There are waterfalls and rock-falls, and flowers and cliffs. The problem is that the road is too narrow to stop your car and take in the scenery. Here at Wailua Falls there is enough room for about 6 cars to pull over. The falls are in full view from the road, making this one of the most photographed scenes in Hawaii. The best images I have of Wailua Falls are taken early in the morning, before the strong sunbeams break through the forest canopy.

"Gentle Giant Series #16" #510
The thrill of kayaking alone with a 65 foot long Humpback whale is completely beyond words. I bring my waterproof camera case, but open it up completely when I get out to open water. The risk of losing the camera gear is worth the reward of the incredible images. Whales often pass directly under my kayak as I hold my breath nervously, but the worst that has happened was when I was covered with a layer of putrid whale spit. No biggie. I always look forward to my next kayak adventure! Be sure to check out the whale section of this website!

"Sweet Memories" #430
Sugar was the king of agriculture in Hawaii for generations -- it still is on Maui -- but the sugar fields are slowly being sold for real-estate development. One lazy afternoon Rachael and I decided to make this portrait of her in a nearby cane field. The tradewinds swayed the sugar gently creating a motion blur around Rachael. I made the image in black & white, and delicately hand-colored her outfit with a subtle hue. Oh, if you don't know her already, Rachael is my indispensable gallery manager for the past 12 years!
