My new line of panoramic photography is a complete deviation from the black & white, sepia toned, hand-colored "style" for which I had become known. After nearly 15 years of photographing Hawaiian people, and the Hula, I wanted to create a new "look" in my portfolio.
Voila! Super-colorful landscape panoramics! Boy, what a fun change this has been.
My panoramic camera is a Fujifilm 617 with a couple of different lenses. I load it mostly with Velvia or T-max 100. This camera keeps me thinking about photography the "old-fashioned way". It can be somewhat difficult to use, compared to modern digital equipment. Shooting a panoramic is similar to shooting a large-format camera. It will take me about 15-20 minutes to get it into the right position and figure out my light-readings. Each frame is 7 inches long, and so a roll of medium format film equals 4 shots. I will typically use all 4 frames to "bracket" my exposure of a single scene.
After I develop my film, it is drum-scanned and burned onto a digitalCD. From that point on, the photograph becomes digital and is "corrected," much in the same manner that I would have manipulated in the traditional darkroom.
Using my wide-format Epson printer, I choose to print my panoramics on acid-free watercolor paper, or canvas. I like the texture and the thick feel.
Perhaps my favorite thing about getting out to shoot scenic landscapes is that it gives me a fantastic excuse to go outdoors to hike and camp with my kids. The natural beauty of Hawaii is a gift from God. A drive to Hana is like passing through the Garden of Eden. I want my kids to "feel" the island the same way I now feel it. My camera forces me to "slow down and smell the Puakenikeni".

All of my panoramic Giclees are printed with "80-100 year" pigments onto Somerset watercolor paper. I use an Epson 9500 Wide-format printer.
Each of the smaller-sized prints is hand-torn and center-mounted onto black archival foamboard. The 5x15" image is mounted on a 10x20" foamboard. The 8x24" print is mounted on 31.5x14.5" foamboard. I sign and title each print on the white border. If you want these sizes framed, a simple 1" solid Koa is what we offer.
The larger 16x48" print is flush-mounted on Foamboard, and comes framed only with our lovely "Koa/Linen/Koa" frame. I sign this print in gold pen, on the image.
