Keiki of Hula
Keiki (kay-key) means "child" in Hawaiian language. Keiki are affectionately referred to as cherished flowers of Hawai'i - representing the many colors of people who make up the beautiful generations in our unique ethnic melting pot. How can you not smile when your own little keiki take the stage? The adorable small performers often begin to attend hula school with Mom and Dad by age four.
The artwork in this collection is printed on acid-free watercolor paper, double matted, and available framed in Koa wood. Remember that our guaranteed safe shipping is absolutely free on all orders shipped within the United States!
Ku'u Wa Li'ili'i
The Time Of My Littleness
#104
So many people comment that this little four-year-old boy, Kapena, looks like a future king sitting on his throne. The Kingdom of Hawai'i was overthrown in 1893; but may someday be re-established as a sovereign nation, perhaps within this boy's lifetime.

Kaikamahine Hula Li'ili'i
Little Hula Girl
#116
Little Jessica Lei captured my heart when she and her halau hula (hula school)
performed for an international crowd in Wailea. She was barely four years old and usually half a step behind her older hula sisters. Since that time, she has always been a favorite dancer to work with.

Ka 'Opu'u Pua I Mohala
A Flower That Began To Unfold
#127
I photographed little Kealalani when he was just nine months old; in preparation for one of the big events in his life -- his one-year birthday lu'au (a huge event in Hawai'i!).
The title is an 'olelo no'eau, or Hawaiian proverb.

Four-year-old Jessica has a smile that's contagious! She dances a sassy hula wearing a raffia skirt and adornments made from palapalai ferns - one of the plants considered precious to Laka, goddess of the hula.

I was fortunate to capture a tender moment between two siblings in this beautiful image. Great for decorating kids' rooms or as a gift for someone who loves children.

Pualei O Ka 'Aina
Cherished Blossom Of The Land
#162
The beauty of Hawai'i is seen clearly in the rainbow colors of its children, whose ethnic blends of Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Puerto Rican, and Portuguese blood are both exotic and appealing. Our little "blossom," Jessica is a sweet example.

Pomai has "eyes like saucers", exclaimed a client who saw this image. She was five years old in this image. A few years ago I worked on her model's portfolio as a young woman. Time flies.

Kau ka Puai Luna, i Luna o ke Ao
Raise the Flower up High, up High to the Sky
#394
The hula is a discipline, much like the martial arts. The traditional dance requires years of practice beginning from a young age. This four-year-old was introduced to me by her kumu hula. Her concentration was so impressive to me. She danced for an hour with very little rest, and all the whille was able to keep her posture and form. I am looking forward to seeing this keiki grow and mature as a dancer over the next several years!
