Randy Jay Braun – Camera Artist of Hawaii

Aloha – Welcome to Maui, Hawaii and to my world as a professional camera artist. The art and business of photography have run in my lineage since 1840. Photography has been my life and my journey. After 28 years as a full-time professional, I am comfortable in my shoes. I dream that my photographs will live on in perpetuity, as a historical record of this culture I love. Allow me to share my passion with you.

As a Hawaii photographer, the hula dance is my most beloved subject. The men, women, and children of hula are iconic cultural figures — legendary worldwide. I also photograph the famous paniolo island cowboys. The culture of Hawaii runs deep with traditions and pride. Of course, the natural panoramic beauty of Hawaii is an organic draw to anyone with a camera–with lush mountains, jungles, waterfalls, rainbows, flowing lava, pristine sand beaches, secret coves, and amazing humpback whales frolicking near the shoreline.

I have studied the people and places of Hawaii in depth. Clients tell me that my  artwork is recognizable and unique, as it seems to connect intimately with the culture. Perhaps I am stubborn, but I often use black & white, sepia, or hand-tinted processing techniques, as I did back in my original darkroom.

My own art gallery has been a landmark on Maui, selling to both locals and tourists for nearly twenty years! Recently, I have moved out of my retail store to concentrate efforts on writing and teaching about photography. Offering photo workshops and photo adventure tours really gets me excited. For five years now, I have traveled to amazing destinations in Italy, bringing groups of like-minded photographers to my favorite places like the Dolomite Alps and historic Venice.

Yes, I teach photography here in Hawaii as well. Join one of my tours. Did you bring your computer? I would love to sit with you and teach the basics of Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop so that we can finish a few of your photos while you are still on the island. I am a member of the Adobe beta-test team and an Adobe Influencer. I have attended the past six annual Photoshop World conferences, and am a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. If I donʻt have the answer, I will find it for you.
