Children of Hawaii

5

The children of Hawaii are often called flowers (nā pua), gifts (nā makana), or leis. Children are cherished and celebrated. A child’s first birthday party is one of the most important celebrations a community will have.

I photograph children. It is very difficult for me because it requires all of my focus and energy — yet, I am pretty good at capturing those little “looks.” A fleeting glance, or wince, or smile, or frown will always occur during a photo shoot, but sometimes a child’s reaction must be carefully enticed. I often distract the child from my camera with the sound of a hula implement. By the time I am finished photographing a child, my knees are raw from crawling on the floor, and I just want to take a nap. Whatever it takes, eh?
