I won the lottery!
First of all, on Sunday, we woke up early to reserve a spot at Maluaka Beach. We were all supposed to meet there at 10am. Of course we were the first ones there - we don't have kids yet!
The first thing I noticed, when my heart dropped into my stomach, was an unrecognizable drive down what used to seem like a dead end. The Maluaka development is in full force.
It is probably the last time our family will gather at our favorite secret spot before all the million dollar condos go up and all the side effects of people that come with it. SAD.
Notice how close the development is to the trees near the beach - that is our favorite family spot.
Heart break aside, the cool calm waters of Maluaka sucked me into the natural beauty of this pristine spot. We picked the last available picnic table with shade just in time. An hour later the family showed up.
Time to hit the beach! My sisters who now live in Alabama and Arizona happened to be both visiting at the same time so this was really a special gathering for all 6 sisters to be together.

The first thing I did was grab my snorkel mask and fins and Duke and I started snorkeling. But not without the nephew wanting to tag along. So Duke piggy backed him so he could come out with us to the deep to find the fish! We sang the song "Under The Sea" from the Little Mermaid - his recent May Day song! So cute!
Then we played keep away in the ocean with a beach ball until we were all tired and ready for lunch! We had a sandwich buffet but nobody wanted my granola bars for dessert!
This is Makohia. He is sooooo adorable! I don't know where he got his bright blue eyes from because it is no where to be found in his parents genetics, yet an angel blessed him with eyes like the color of the ocean...blue green. The photo doesn't do justice to how electric his eye color is against his bronze skin.

All I know is that this kid is going to melt a lot of girls hearts!
Fun beach day aside, today is like Christmas Eve X100!!!
Housemas Eve!!!
How else could I explain the excitement in the air... because we won the lottery against all odds.
Tomorrow morning Duke and I will be picking out a lot at Spencer Homes Waikapu Gardens Phase 4B - the final phase.
That lot will be for the house of our dreams all within an affordable reach - unheard of on Maui until Mr. Spencer came along!
We will be selecting our options on house color, carpet color, tile color, cabinets and counter tops. Hopefully construction will start this summer!
It is a blessing of all blessings. It is the happiness of all happiness to think that we are on our way to live a dream on Maui!
It will be an incredible journey towards equity now!!!

Smooth Sailing...
What fun it is to be out on a sail boat on the Pacific Ocean! My sister Jessie is visiting from Arizona for her 25th birthday and I had to take her on a snorkel tour right away!
So Duke and I and a few friends went on the Paragon Sailing Charters Lana'i Picnic Snorkel and Sail!
On the way over to Lana'i we caught a 30 pound mahimahi that was sold right away to Lana'i Four Seasons. It was a big boy and one of the female crew members reeled it in with ease. Instead of "braining" it as Duke kept offering to do with the gaff, the captain "drowned" it with two cans of COORS light and BACARDI!!! Didn't know you could do that!!!
Then up ahead, near Manele harbor, we ran into a pod of at least 50 spinner dolphins. They were everywhere jumping and spinning, splashing and gliding at the surface of the water. We could almost reach out and touch them.

It was soooo cool, and just what I asked the universe to show us on the trip.
Then we snorkeled at Manele Bay and it was so clear and I was surprised to see so many fish. Lots of nice coral growths and some juicy looking uhu or parrot fish that is really yummy stuffed and baked! But we couldn't fish as it is a reserve.
It was Jessie's first time snorkeling and she did pretty good for first time. It is hard to remember to relax and breath only through your mouth!
I love snorkeling and I could stay in the water for hours looking at this incredible underwater world. I even brought my own mask to make sure the experience was optimum as possible.
Duke dives down and pretends he has a spear and aims for the fish which doesn't seem to even be bothered by his presence. I saw some moorish idols, racoon butterfly fish, goat fish, manini, and even a big stick fish on top of others I don't know the names for.
Then we walked over from the harbor to Hulopo'e Beach - Gorgeous! They packed a picnic lunch for us and we chose a vacant uncrowded picnic table next to some shady palms and relaxed with the view and refreshing lunch.
We jumped in the ocean and the beach there reminds me of the colors of Big Beach. We played in the waves for an hour and watched a few beach goers play touch foot ball on this private secluded beach. I want to go back already.
Then it was time to sail back from our awesome day! I kept layering on the sunscreen so that I wouldn't be a lobster looking tourist! We had numerous mai tais and champagne while Duke played his ukulele the whole way back. The captain loved it because for once someone was entertaining him!
Then close to Lahaina harbor, at about 150' the captain stopped for their traditional "blue water" swim. It was so hot in the sun so this I couldn't resist! Oh My God the water was electric blue like my eyes have never seen. We all frolicked in the ocean pretending like we weren't scared that it was so deep and that we were now in a range know to creatures of the deep blue. But without even thinking, I jumped off the boat again. There is something about being on a boat with friends that make you daring. Maybe it was the champagne!

Mahalo to the fabulous Paragon CREW...for helping me become a shade darker and for memories I will never forget!!!

Pleasant Surprises...
Today was filled with pleasant, random surprises. I will share a few!!!

One of the world famous Randy Jay Braun models/dancers paid me an unexpected visit all the way from Florida!
Cirony looks the same as she did 20 years ago (brat!).
And she is still dancing hula too.
I think that is the secret to staying young and healthy ...dance hula!
Here's another closeup...look at how white I am!!! I can't wait to get out into the sun!
Then, a few favorite repeat customers who are now 'ohana came by on their way to the CHICAGO concert at the MACC. I thought for sure they were back at home in Plymouth, MA but here they were still enjoying the the aloha spirit on Maui...one last night!
Then of course I had a whole bag of guava filled MALASADAS from KOMODA's delivered by some wonderful ladies from O'ahu and San Diego who had to come by and finally visit our world class gallery in Makawao! Even though Komoda's is right there, I rarely find a day that I can get me some pastries and when I do make the effort, they are always closed by chance!!! These wonderful ladies happened to be staying at the Four Seasons Resort on Maui too, just for a few nights of world class treatment! MAHALO!!!!

Enjoying The Journey And The Destination!
They say, about life, that it is not the destination, it's the journey.

But actually I think it is about both. You have to know your destination to know your journey!
The good life has Divine purpose.
We have to understand what we desire before we can work towards achieving THE DESTINATION of our goals on our journey.

On the way to work in Wailea I stopped to ponder the journey of destination.
While enjoying this very moment on our huge planet at this one tiny spot,
completely alone,
I thanked God for showing me the right direction in life.
A clear path in a strange world!

Dinner For Two...
Today is the 13th anniversary of being happily unmarried to my highschool sweetheart - the day we went to Junior Prom in a silver limo!
Isn't he handsome! Duke and I have come a long way together.

I had a concierge offer to try the new location of Mala in Wailea at the Wailea Marriott. So we had a table for two in the otherwise quiet new restaurant.
It was great to see some old Renaissance faces there! I had a key lime pie martini and it was good because of the graham cracker crust on the rim!
Of course I had an ahi dish...something like the Ahi Avalon...it was good, but the sauce was too thick and spicy that you lost the ahi flavor

Duke had the crab legs! YUM! There was a nice pile of 'um!
But otherwise, nothing was too fabulous or memorable. Service could've been much better.
I guess I am so spoiled with eating all the time at Mama's Fish House.
It made me also truly appreciate working at the Four Seasons too, instead of the Marriott . All I know is I feel like I have come a long way in 6 months and there is no going back now...

The Way To UpCountry, Maui
Every day when I drive up the mountain to the 1745' elevation to Makawao, I am always entranced by the comforting clouds that blanket the shoulders of Haleakala.

The mist over the green pastures with the sun shining through is something I expect to see. When the clouds are not here, then it is not a typical day to UpCountry.

The clouds hardly ever pass a certain point. It is so predictable, almost like there is an invisible line where the boundary of the forest ends.
The clouds over Makawao often form rainbows. The beauty of this area on Maui commands its presence. And I spend most of the hours in my day here, in the heart of this place.
The way to UpCountry Maui is peaceful.
God speaks in the beauty here.
It tells me to follow my heart and all my dreams will come true.
The rainbow shows me the magic of nature and the dialogue of desires in my life - I found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and it is peace and happiness.

Enjoying the rain...
Maui was pretty much the only island that got some kind of rain yesterday. As I drove home I enjoyed the view of the rain coming into Kahului harbor.
Dark damp clouds filled the sky teasing the earth with its goodness.
Like Kulanihako'i - a mythical pond or lake in the sky.
Its overflow comes to earth as rain. Like heaven agitated.

The other day, we had some Kona wind blow in more clouds and the whole day was dark. At 4 o'clock it seemed like 6:30pm. The sky came down and Makawao was filled with mist.
I couldn't even see the mango tree across the street.
It was kinda scary driving home too because even headlights were barely peeking through the thick, low clouds.

While 'Apelila flies away, I am thankful to be working so much these days - with both of my jobs. I have a busy summer ahead that requires lots of funds!
One occasion includes my 30th birthday in July! I am planning to stay at the Four Seasons on Lana'i for such a special occasion!
My sister Jessie Ka'ahumanu is coming in at the end of 'Apelila for her 25th birthday and I will try to arrange a special day trip to swim with dolphins at Manele Bay on Lana'i. I haven't seen her for a while so it will be so nice to be together!

Can you smell the puakenikeni...
It must be time for Merrie Monarch Hula Festival again...
I am so thankful and honored to have been able to watch the ho'ike for a fantastic Maui Halau Hula competing this weekend in the 40 Something Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo, Hawai'i.

This is their 5th year in a row entering this huge HULA event, and they have come a long way. They have 30 haumana competing this year!
I have really enjoyed watching them grow over the years, and especially seeing hula growing on MAUI. The real hula. The good hula. There is nothing like it!
Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka will be using the punui, or knee drum in their hula kahiko performance. This takes a genuine amount of concentration and co-ordination to maintain rhythm and movement through this challenging dance.
The hula is pleasing because of the drummer.
Their hula 'auana performance has some very unique choreography that I think will really impress the judges. Especially since the song takes on that style of the story being told. I can't wait unitl around 10:30pm on Saturday night to see this performance!
Then there is Ipo...competing for Ms. Aloha Hula tomorrow night. She is #5 in the line up.

She is gently powerful and impressively applied in her studies of HULA.
I love her chanting voice and style as she is so confident, yet so humble about it! I look forward to seeing her hula performance soon!
Hawaiian Airlines had a videographer filming their ho'ike as this halau has been selected to be featured this year in their in-flight video presentations! That is so awesome!

Well, it is a nice misty Makawao day. I hope we get enough rain to make the island green through the spring as summer will be here soon enough.
Perfect shopping weather to enjoy the brilliant colors of Randy's photography in the gallery!
Wait 'til you see what he is up to these days. The new releases are truly pace setters in the world of digital imaging!

One Month Old...
I had a visit today from Punahele, our part-time employee who has been on maturnity leave. She now has a beautiful baby girl named "Milan" like the city! Here is a rare moment of peace and quiet!

It is so hard for me to imagine that this living human baby came out of her stomach. That still trips me out! I guess because I have not gone through that experience yet, but when the time is right, I pray my baby will make it easy for me!
Beware of attack GECKO!

This gecko is an original creation by Steven Lee Smeltzer - a HYBRID from Ha'iku - land of the many gecko's!
I think he may have injected purple dye into the eggs before they hatched! I love this guy! Smeltzer creates one of a kind ceramics while riding the wave of creation in the realm of whimsy!
I collected my first Smeltzer about 14 years ago and I still have him to bring me a smile just when I need it. As someone with a lot of imagination, I completely appreciate the creativity that Steven has!

Spring Break...Is it over yet?
Why didn't we have two weeks of vacation for Spring Break when I went to school? Gosh, it seems like there have been kids out and about in Makawao for forever now!
Some of them look for chickens across the street at the local Makawao library, others frolic up and down the street with giggling glances as boys or girls pass by. Some manage to find there way curiously into our gallery with their ICEEE looking for something to do to kill time.
I don't have kids yet, but I can imagine how parents feel for two long weeks. I would get bored of playing Monopoly and Scrabble over and over again! But then again, do people play board games anymore?

This image features some of my favorite things in the gallery today! Yes my favorites change!
Robert Blaak has made some of the most beautiful hand crafted paddles I have ever seen. As I sell them, they get more and more beautiful. This is a traditional Hawaiian Koa Canoe Paddle with the i'o or upe at the tip of the blade to reinforce the most vulnerable part of the blade.
You can't help but notice the brightly colored prints by Anna Halldin-Maule - my favorite oil painter on Kaua'i - which appear as photos, but these are limited edition prints from original oils. One day, I aspire to learn and watch her paint, and I would die to be one of her models! I am working on my abs...!!! One day, if I ever do get to decorate a house of my own, I will feature several of my favorites in the largest sizes possible! My dream!!!
Finally, I just got a Karen Ehart Fused Glass Shell Bowl in a large size that is the most beautiful cobalt blue color and the sculpted shape of the shell groves are some of the deepest I've seen yet. This will sell very soon!
I heard that the Moloka'i Ranch is closing...oh boy, lots of changes coming for Moloka'i. I have to find out the scoops...

Happy St. Patrick's Day...
I am one of those who claim that you can't pinch me today because my eyes are green, so even though I may not look like I am wearing green today, I feel that I am inherently exempt! Hah, hah!
I remember in school days people would claim that their underwear was green so they wouldn't get pinched...I won't go there!

I went to a beautiful wedding this weekend...some friends who moved to the mainland a few years ago to pursue big dreams have come back to celebrate their union on Maui.
It was held at the scenic Diamond Resort. What a view this place has! We saw lots of whale activity and sailboats doing afternoon tours. I love the restaurant at this resort - Capiche - it is so yummy and their view is prime.
Chester Patoc and Marina Yamada tied the knot with a traditional wedding complete with 16 people in their court! They looked great!

I tried not to cry as the emotions of such a special and happy occasion well up with in me.
And I forgot to bring tissue...sniffle,sniffle.
It was a short and sweet wedding ceremony and they even had a dove release! I have a new appreciation for these white wedding doves as I happen to have one as a pet myself...that I raised from an egg!
One day this bird will be in my own wedding ceremony! One day...don't get your hopes up too soon!
The reception followed UpCountry at the Pukalani Community Center which they decked out with beautiful decorations complete with fresh orchids as centerpieces.

The food was traditional lu'au food typical of any local wedding. If you were invited to a local wedding, this is what your plate might look like...filled with rare delicacies like chicken long rice, squid luau, poi, poke, macaroni salad, kalua pig, taro, haupia, and RICE... although I passed on the intestines!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: 'ai (ay-ee) or to eat, taste, bite, harvest, edible

Amateur Aspiring Artist Releases 2nd Oil Painting Ever...
Here is a sneak peak at a very simple, yet playful original oil painting
that I am ready to find a title, sign as finished...
and hopefully sell!
I think this painting is finished, yet, how do you know when to stop - when is it complete?

I need to sign up for a class with George Allen...for beginners with oil!
I actually haven't painted since my carpel tunnel surgery and I am so happy that I could paint for hours where as before, my hand would become so hard to work with falling asleep so quickly.
But for someone whose last art class was in high school, I think I did pretty good trying out oil painting. Of course I had to buy Rembrant paints just because my favorite painter in the whole wide world who lives on Kaua'i uses these...!
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
In the mean time the gallery is brimming with the most beautiful art we have ever had! Everyone is inspired by the beauty of Island Living within this place and the aloha spirit that embraces them.

Living positively is consistent with everyday life in the gallery, no matter what goes on in the world!

Island Pottery looks so nice in the gallery again!
All the way from Florida, some very cute turtles have found a new home in Hawai'i!

I have a new mug to use to! Mahalo Doug!

The Old House Next Door...
My dad just celebrated another birthday on Malaki 2nd so I paid him a belated visit yesterday! I am really bad...I always think it is on the 4th for some odd reason, so yesterday I thought I would be early to welcome him to another year at 70 something.
I was late as usual!

I actually got to go to the BEACH on Sunday...had the whole day off for some odd reason. I enjoyed every last drop of overcast sunshine at the beach by the Maui Lu...I don't know the name!
My old room mate Greg and his wife and daughter are moving back to Tennessee.
Sometimes it is so hard for people who move to live in Hawai'i because of the long distance and cost to travel back and forth!
So it was a going away party too. I got to bury my nieces and nephews in the sand and make them a large sand castle. We saw a few breaches and whale activity. Caught a few fish with our Ulua poles. Then watched the sunset into the Pacific Ocean once again.

I love looking at this old house next door to my dad's place in Oma'opio. It reminds me of a part of Old Hawai'i that still remains - barely.
It reminds me of the house we grew up in on Molokai...weathered and aged like a mature red wine. Houses are not built like they used to be - so individual and sparadic. My favorite are the houses on Lana'i... you know what I mean?
Well, I am soon to be thinking about a house of my own...but this will be a model in a modern day community of new development on Maui. My lottery number is up and I am so LUCKY that it hasn't truly hit me yet. I will be floating on cloud 9 when they call me soon to come and pick my lot! OMG!
If you think I am bubblyness is contagious now, wait 'til you see me when I finally can say, I BOUGHT A HOUSE OF MY OWN ON MAUI!
To think that one day it could be old and weathered with memories too!
Stay Tuned!

My Life, Is Like An Orchid Flower, Beginning To Unfold...
I feel like my life is a bouquet of orchids, finally on the brink of blossoming .

I have been patiently waiting and watching - from the flower stalk that emerges from the very root of the plant, pushing, growing upward. To the final forming of flower buds...

Then slowly, after it seems like it has been forever, the flower blossoms start to reveal the hidden beauty within...one by one opening up.
I never know what colors are going to come out, but it is always worth the wait!
For now, I am still watching the stalk only beginning to form in this stage of my life. But at least I know the blossoms will be beautiful...stay tuned!
Do YOU have a favorite???

Kukahi 2008
I was so glad to attend the Kukahi 2008 Keali'i Reichel Concert at the M.A.C.C. again this year as it is a tradition not to be missed.
When Duke and I arrived at 6:15pm, the outside tent was filled with pre-show entertainment by none other than Halau Kekuaokala'au'ala'iliahi with kumu hula 'Iliahi and Haunani Paredes.

Here, notice the beautiful ladies lined up to enter the stage...
While waiting in line for the Kalua Pig and Teriyaki Chicken plate, we saw Dan and Shiela - our official concert sponsers - who come to see Keali'i Reichel every year (not the whales, Fred!).
Dan had taken a once in a life time shot of two whales with identical breaches on a recent whale watch that blew us away!
Amongst the pre-show vendors, Shiela managed to find an amazing 5 Strand Kahelelani Ni'ihau Shell Lei that she got for Valentines Days to come...!
Everyone and their aunty was wearing Pupu O Ni'ihau...including me!

As far as the show...it is unlike any other! Especially on his own home turf. You just never know who the special guests will be.
The theme this year was E Ho'i Ka Nani I Na Wai 'Eha - Let the glory return to the four waters, reminding us of our kuleana to restore stream flow to it's natural state to revitalize segments of the 'aina long dormant.
I would love to see that happen again on Maui, as these rich waters have been disproportionately diverted for many years by large agricultural interests, thereby cutting off the natural flow to the open ocean.
After the hula kahiko performances there where so many great songs Keali'i sang, some with hula, some without. Kumu can do whatever he wants and always puts on an incredible show.
Then, I knew it, he had Kumu Haunani come up and do a few hula performances again! As a long time concert enthusiast, I really miss the days when Haunani was a haumana on the stage and would "float" with facial expressions so sincere - to Keali'i's calming voice.
But I knew there may be a time when she would dance again as a special guest. And it was this year!
Another special guest was one of Haunani's talented haumana Leimakamae - who is a young keiki performer who took First Runner Up at the most recent prestigious Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Hula Competition - and Keali'i was there to sing for her performance. I was so happy to see them do that mele again!
Other special guests included the "Quadrupal Threat" Kumu Napua Greig who sang her heart out along with Weldon Kekauoha. Keali'i even had his own string quartet from Japan performing back up music. FANTASTIC!
Alaka'i Paleka - the "Morning Goddess" on KPOA reminded us not to use cameras throughtout the performance, but I couldn't resist a shot at the end of the show - after we all sang together "Hawai'i Pono'i".

Gifts From Ni'ihau
He Nani Maoli No... Truly Heavenly!
Today we received some of the most exquisitely hand crafted Ni'ihau Shell Jewelry that I have been anticipating to show in the gallery for over a year now!

The first is a commonly requested for, but very difficult to find - colorful 5 strand Kahelelani lei strung with the tiniest variety of shells found on Ni'ihau.
Notice the hot pink and white varieties - and the greenish brown color ; those are natural color mutations that are rare to find and collect, making this a Ni'ihau shell collectors item that is hard to resist.

Then there is this delicately sculpted Crown Flower Ni'ihau shell lei. Notice how closely it was strung in the likeness of a crown flower lei.
I love the unique varieties of color used playfully - back and forth - like the design plays itself.
Talk About Amazing, huh?
On another note I am so happy to hear that THE WRITERS are going back to work again after the 3 month strike! That means we get to see some great movies and shows coming out that have been on hold and the writers are happy finally with the arrangement settled - I hope!.
I got to hear a first hand account of this whole shenanagan from a wonderful person and friend who has endured this whole experience - determined on fighting for what is only fair.
Can't wait to see what's next, Mike!
Did I tell you that I have my very own homing PIGEONdove? Well I do! Meet Ke'o. He is the product of my pure white dove and a nice looking blue and white speckled neighborhood pidgoen I rescued.

Well I finally let him out of the cage when he was 6 months - which was a few days before Christmas. Well my dog scared him and he flew away.
He finally came back a few days later and ever since then he flies all around and comes back to rest in the mango tree.
He sleeps on the roof of his parents cage too. He follows me around in the morning and then flies off after eating.
You have not experienced it all until you have the feeling of having a pet that flies away and comes back!
The Hawaiian Phrase Of The Day Is: Aloha au ia 'oe ( with a kahako over the "a" in ia)
ah-low-ha ah-ooh yah oh-eh - or - I LOVE YOU!

Finally A Sunset!
Sure is nice to see the warmth of the sunset again! That winter weather lasted for some time and it was starting to make a few sun-seeking visitors a little uneasy!

Life has been full of time management compromises lately for me...
Should I blog or clean the house... but if I clean the house I won't have time for cooking dinner...then I order Pizza!
I am adjusting to my new schedule at the gallery. I have been forever off on Mondays.
I have a lot of repeat customers who avoid Makawao on Mondays because of that!!! Well, for a little while, I have adjusted my normal routine to accommodate our new artist employee - T.G. - oh wait...Teresa Gleason!
Teri makes a hand-painted line of ceramics that have been on display in our gallery as long back as I can remember working in The Randy Jay Braun Gallery! She has phased designs in and out over the years in a truly limited edition manner!
Please come in and meet the artist on Thursdays (and buy her one of a kind ceramics) just to show your support of our new incredible employee!!!
I am now off from the gallery on Thursdays and most Sundays! But that is when you can most likely find me at the only FIVE STAR & DIAMOND resort in Hawai'i stirring up a storm of Aloha at the most prestigious concierge desk on Maui (in my biased opinion)!

Today on Maui...
We are bringing out our winter coats and putting on that rusty defroster in the car...it's SNOWING!
Well, at least it is on Haleakala!
I woke up this morning and took this photo from my lanai in between the passing rain.
Last night I tried a new recipe! It was GREAT!
I broiled zuccinni and chicken breasts

Two Words: Valentine's Day!
I've been hearing those words a lot lately!
People who are in love, shop at The Randy Jay Braun Gallery!
In love with life, in love with Hawai'i, in love with someone enough to take time out, amongst it all, to find them something special. Something that feels good - Maika'i!

And, its been the guys shopping in with their wives suggesting such an unobligation!
Who couldn't LOVE Valentines DAY! It's a good excuse to go and eat out!
I know where I am going... Mama's Fish House.
I wasn't planning on this, but I can't resist using an incredible gift certificate I just got...MAHALO Keith & Sandi!
Otherwise, Pono the dog is doing fine as he is recovering from a small surgery that we had Dr. Martin perform earlier this week ~ to remove a suspicious lump and a few troublesome "sun spots".
Duke stayed home this week to help him in the recovery and ended up performing his first emergency re-stitching - once we discovered Pono chewed off some of his stitches.
Let's just say that he did a fantastic job trying not to throw up and he did a good job stitching too!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: kihikihi (key-hee-key-hee) or Curves, corners, zig zag
Rachael's Mana'o Mana:
When direction seems spiritually cloudy in life, I try to remember that
the entire scheme
of universal creation and evolution,
is simply a matter of
converting
potentialities into actualities.

Island Pottery Finds A New Home On Maui!
If you have been to the gallery lately, amongst the Aloha Christmas Tree that is still being used as a display to sell our "Dream Lei's", and Randy Braun's incredible new selection of Deluxe Gallery Wrapped Canvas Giclee, you will notice the presence of a fantastic new ceramic artist...Doug Jones.
A 35 year veteran potter, Doug is inspired by his island home in Florida and his frequent trips to Hawai'i.
I had the opportunity of chancing to meet him personally on a visit to our gallery.
He had just been over to my home island Moloka'i and met my hanai father Keli'i Mawae - The People's Mayor of Moloka'i' - and picked up Dad's new CD recording playing slack key guitar on the homestead on Molokai.

In fact, my father's Hawaiian music now serves as a source of creative influence as Doug often plays it in his studio!
As an artist with selective taste, Doug felt confident that his work belonged in our gallery.
So I perused a visit to his website and low and behold, I saw some of the most beautiful hand crafted, heavy duty pottery that I have always dreamed of selling in the gallery & hopefully using!
His functional pieces are lead-free and can be placed in the microwave, oven, and dishwasher!
Coming from a fisherman family on Moloka'i, I find that it's presence in the gallery is so familiar...like it has always been. Funny, but it brings to me a fond recollection of my childhood memories.
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: kinai (key-nah-ee) or To Continue, To Persist. It also can mean to extinguish as a fire, to put out as a light, or to lower your voice!
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: The universe is like a
striving, dreaming, aspiring, advancing
ARTIST
who seeks to transcend the world of material things in an effort to achieve a spiritual goal.

Never A Dull Moment...6:05pm

This year has certainly gotten off to a productive start!
Pono (my beloved 80 lb. Pure Breed Red Nose Pit Bull child) got a trip to the Makawao Veterinary Clinic because I am worried about a few "sun spots" that I want removed before anything worse becomes of them.
Of course Luna (my other beloved 18 lb. Chihuahua Pug - CHUG - child) had to tag along! They are inseperable and it is so funny to see how people react to this couple!
The Dog Whisperer would be proud of me...I got Pono to fully submit(laying on his back and giving us his belly) on the cool floor in Dr. Martin's office.

Had to get the car registered and safety checked.
Made an appointment for a "trim" next week. I was warned by my favorite hair stylist at my favorite salon - Paragon Salon in Makawao - to trim my hair every 3 months...and it's been 4 or 5!
Getting a massage today after work at the Maui School For Therapeutic Massage - I can hardly wait!
Got a new cell phone to replace my ancient, dying, out-of-date Nextel.
Still must take all recyclables from the holidays to the redemtion center to get all $25.00 back!
And possibly re-pot my orchids on my next day off.
Good Beginnings!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: 'Omole (with a kahako over the first O) (ohh-moh-lay) or BOTTLE, Jug, JAR.
'Omole also means BARE, smooth, HAIRLESS!
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: My life has been a voyage of discovery.
Opportunities await to gain valuable experiences.
I have found that the imitation of my personal ideas and concepts of God is the key to perfection.
My Secret.

Hau'oli Makahiki Hou! Happy New Year!
Catch Me If You Can!...
Is it me, or has Maui been keeping me so busy, I am finally able to have a moment to blog!
I am so thankful for a new year in life! I ended the year dining one last time before 2007 ended at the Hali'imaile General Store. YUMMY! I had the ahi of course! It was prepared with a pineapple salsa that I wasn't exactly used to, but nonetheless, ahi is always yummy!
Bev Gannon showed up later in the evening with an entourage which created quite the buzz!

Next stop...Mama's Fish House on Saturday!
I also survived my first "Festive Season" at the Four Seasons Maui At Wailea Concierge Desk! It was a blast!
This display in the lobby was made by the pastry department entirely out of sugar! Amazing!

COCONUT WIRELESS:
It was great this evening when the first phone call I received on my shift at the Concierge Desk froma very famous male actor who's name is too confidential to mention... who needed directions to an undisclosed local restaurant! He was very nice and appreciative for being in so many of my favorite movies!
Caught me on the run again...!

Is IT finally over???
I can't believe Christmas just came and went again! I finally made my last "gift delivery" yesterday!
What a wonderful warm Holiday it was! On Christmas Day, Erin and I headed down to our friends pool at her condo in Kihei with the cooler of Heineken "Light" and her itunes and we were accompanied by the rays of the sun and the occasional sound of a splash in the otherwise unoccupied pool.
My annual family gathering was a success! While we never have a true photographer, we always manage to to fit together for a shot. Here I tried to use my timer - which I am embarrassed to say I have yet to figure out - but instead Duke sacrificed himself to get this fun shot!

And this is the tip of the volcano!
My nephews Kahiau, Kailoa, and Aukai were "stoked" on their new "surf shorts" and shirt that aunty Rachael bought them. They are getting to THAT age now...where they are concerned about their wardrobe! My oldest nephews Kailoa and Aukai are now in the 6th and 7th grade at the same school that I went to for those grades!
OMG, Gift buying will never be the same as simply browsing through the toy section!
Then we all play "dirty santa" which is a grab bag game and it is always fun to see who ends up with what. Our general limit is around ten dollars so, one popular gift was a ten dollar bill wrapped around a can of Vienna Sausage! BONUS!
I won a funnel cake maker! WhoooHooo!
Meanwhile, I couldn't help but check out the car that Aunty Bessie - A.K.A. Miss Spam, Hawai'i - and her new friend came in.

Apparently he runs a custom car shop in Kihei and get you anything you want super fast.
This beauty is usually kept in the garage and I think it rents out to newlyweds!
All I know is I am ready to use my gift certificates to the Makawao School For Massage very soon! This season has been especially busy and super fun, but exhausting! Perfect reason to treat myself.
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: ka'a (kah-ah) or in this case means Car, Automobile, Carriage.
This word actually has 10 main meanings!
Duke's Pidgeon Phrase Of The Day Is: Yo Kah stay cherreh. (Your car is cherry.) Your car is nice.
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: Love is Infectious.
But only genuine and unselfish love is truly contagious.

Let The Christmas Parties Begin...!
One thing is for sure: Hawai'i people love an excuse to party!
Especially during the Holidays, and especially at employee Christmas parties! Duke and I had fun at his employee Christmas party at the Grand Wailea Resort.
There were 1200 people that took up the entire grand ballroom!
There was a wonderful selection of food on the buffet lines including POKE & shrimp tempura being cooked right there in great big woks by Kincha's own chefs. I made room for breaded mahi mahi and prime rib too!
I skimmed over the desserts - no cheesecake, my favorite - and found my way into the "Starbucks Coffee" line!
That sure kept me up with the band that started rockin' the house! I can't remember their name for the life of me but they did impersonations of famous songs while playing their live music. Quiet a scene...!
For brief moments, the band stopped to call out names of winners of door prizes.
Well Duke actually won a prize this year and got called up to claim his iPOD Nano! He was so stoked! We were considering getting another one too and here, this blessing comes our way.
I had a feeling too...it never fails me!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: ho'olaule'a (hoe-oh-lah-ooh-lay-ah) or Festivity, Large Party, or Celebration
Duke's Pidgeon Phrase Of The Day Is:
galagalas (gah-lah-gah-lah-s) or ( it's gross...are you ready?) mucus, or phlegm!
When you get sick, you gotta get out your galagalas!
Rachael's Mana'o Mana:
Look well to your goals of divine destiny. Experience compassion, choose goodness, labor faithfully.

Making A Splash!
Today was a great day for me to get geared up for the New Year that is sneaking up on me - Year Of The Rat. Time to change out the old calendars and get used to writing 2008!
I want to do some "New Year's" spring cleaning - throw away a bunch of stuff that we never use.
Nothing like starting off a new year on the planet in a clutter free home. I am trying to imaginatively achieve simplicity in life!
Instead I washed the dogs, cleaned the fish tank, and did standard chores - like washing dishes, doing laundry, cleaning the bathroom and swiffing the house. I had to clean my Vornado fan too so I used the left over air in Duke's Paintball Air Tanks to blow the dust away. It worked for the most part!
Afterward, I headed in to Kihei to enjoy a new attraction in South Maui - DA RUSH!
Charlie Maxwell and partners invited a few concierge on Maui to attend a familiarization tour of their new flow rider next to Lulu's. We had some inu and pupu and talked about how it all works and costs of course.

I think it is a great idea and it seemed popular among the kama'aina already. I hope that it is successful and paves the way for other alternative activities for all ages.
Of course I was a chicken and I didn't bring my suit to jump in and try it, but a few other fellow concierge actually did! Maybe next time!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: inu (ee-new) or to drink, a drink, drinking
Duke's Pidgeon Phrase Of The Day Is: Suck 'um up or To drink
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: Only a poet can discern poetry in the commonplace prose of routine existence.

The Aloha Christmas Tree...

I think my "Aloha Christmas Tree" looks great considering I wasn't prepared to decorate one in the gallery this year! It was actually really fun to lei the Christmas tree!
When Diane Ishikawa came by to the gallery today on her lunch break from the Makawao Post Office, she came bearing gifts...inventory of more "Dream Leis'" handmade by her and her sister especially for our gallery!
The idea came to me the second I couldn't find display room for all 24 finger yarn leis...decorate our near naked, all natural tree that Randy delivered last Saturday for our holiday celebration in Makawao Town - which was a blast by the way!
Otherwise you'll find an assortment of one-of-a-kind hand painted ceramic ornaments by Teresa Gleason featuring her all new "Tapa Print" Design. I love them!
I actually got all of my Christmas shopping done for this year. That is so super early for me, Ms. procrastinater; wait 'til the day before, looking for last minute gifts on bare shelves. Nope, with 3 new additions in my family this year, I can't afford to wait. I spent 5 hours wrapping presents. Ouch!
Christmas to me is about family and the spirit of giving. I love being able to bless my loved ones with something they'll appreciate and hope it makes life better!
Everyone has their own special way of celebrating this tradition or time of year. I have had customers who don't celebrate Christmas. I have had customers who celebrate Winter Solstice with festivities. Sometimes the true meaning gets caught up in the hype of 50% off specials and
fighting for parking stalls.
Personally, I never really caught on to Christianity and struggled for "truth". I later learned in my own spirituality that the birth of Jesus was on August 21st, 7 B.C.
Yet, this is nonetheless, the time of the year that most take time out to acknowledge the birth of the Son of Man. One thing is for certain... year round, you will feel his presence through my love and devotion of service to others.
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: makili (mah-key-lee) or "To crack, appear through a crack, come to light, show"
Ke la makili loa ka la'au kalikimaka... The sun peers forth on the Christmas tree.
Duke's Pidgeon Phrase Of The Day Is: why, badda you? or Does that bother you?
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: I desire a broader viewpoint of religious life and a more liberal concept of personal spiritual freedom.

Sleepless Kona Storms...
I had to take down my wind chimes for the last few days because they were playing a Kona wind symphony!
I'm sure my neighbors appreciated that. But still, it is so hard to sleep with the howling wind blowing humid moist air in the abnormal direction. The mango branches scratch steadily on my tin roof and the sound of the wind through the trees is endless. Blotches of heavy rain drops beat moving rhythms in the huge gusts of wind.
No sense fighting it and trying to sleep so I stayed up listening to the chaos hoping my Zebra finches don't blow away!

There was some unusual cloud patterns above Haleakala this morning as Duke headed into the storm to attempt to work on the rainy beach at the Grand Wailea. I caught it just in time before the next patch of dark grey clouds rolled quickly to cover any resemblance of blue sky. Poor thing! I am sure the guests there are miserable for paying top dollar for their room, getting nothing but rain on this winter week on Maui.
This storm almost parallels Duke having to deal with some inappropriate and plain out rude guests yesterday who mocked Duke when he kindly asked for them to observe the NO SMOKING signs at their ocean front cabana. Then he got the bird when he asked them a second time!
No problem, call the manager.
Well they're under new management again and their managers don't
have the olos olos and are dodo brain so he got no support. I believe the quote was "there is nothing we can do"! I would've QUIT!
That is why I am so thankful to work where I can help happy nice customers buy artwork to grace their homes with the spirit of ALOHA.
Of course the human element will always come with challenges, which, Yes, even I get it working at the most beautiful place on earth, but it is how we handle ourselves and keep our composure on doing what is right (kaulike) - that is the true test.
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: kaulike (cow-lee-kay) or equality, justice, impartial, parallel, to balance evenly, make alike, treat fairly,
Duke's Pidgeon Word Of The Day Is: olo olo (oh-low oh-low) or balls as in testicals! & dodo brain (dough-dough brain) or people who act like they don't know or acting dumb.
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: Greatness lies not so much in possessing strength as in making wise and divine use of such strength.

GOT FISH?

I love Yellowfin Tuna - aka Ahi! This beauty was caught by Duke's brother Sam on the Hana coast the day before Thanksgiving!
I had to take a photo before they sliced it up into sashimi! YUM!
COCONUT WIRELESS:
I got to help my first celebrity at the Four Seasons Wailea Concierge Desk the other day. I actually didn't know it, but this special female actress came up to the desk to ask for directions to eat at Sansei Restaurant in Kihei. She had a small oriental child which I later found out she adopted.
But Mr. Duke was hanging out all day at the beach working at the Grand Wailea yesterday with what's her name...oh gosh...I guess I have to tell you later! Oh Yeah! Jennifer Love Hewitt with some guy from the DVD Band of Brothers.
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: poina (poh-ee-nah) or To Forget!

Rachael Rocks!
Today was a busy day! Usually after Thanksgiving it gets busy on "Black Friday" or "Cyber Monday", but today was rockin'!

Literally.
I took a moment to sit and relax after selling this unbelieveably gorgeous solid "curly koa" rocking chair by Master Woodworker Randall Watkins. Of course, Randy Braun delivered it to a local residence where it has a permanent new home.
Otherwise, we are getting our first winter rain on Maui. As I look down to the valley and Kahului, it is covered in gray rain clouds. In Makawao, the stillness comforts me of failing evening light and the freshness that rain brings.
Today was a perfect day! I can hardly wait for the Holiday tomorrow to spend time with family, laughing and eating!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: noho paipai (no-hoe pie-pie) or Rocking Chair
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: The high mission of any art is by its illusions to foreshadow a higher universe reality, and to crystallize the emotions of time into the thought of eternity.

Aloha From Maui's Original Fine Art Photography Gallery!
I hope you are having a GREAT day! I am so excited to have the HOLIDAYS starting again!

I am a gift wrapping specialist and if you would like a personal shopping concierge, I am the best on Maui! I can offer ideas for a unique, hand-made gift from our gallery that will make you say WOW - and offer complimentary flawless gift wrap and have it shipped to you or to your gift recipient before it's too late! You will be so happy if if you do!
For all of you cooking this week for a time of Family Thanksgiving - more power to you! Your sweat and slaving in the kitchen for a moment of enjoyment is unmatched! And if you're going to a buffet dinner at a local restaurant, please tip your chef!
My HUGE family is getting together - potluck style - and Duke's Dad has been obsessing over the two turkeys he is making for the last month now! I will be making my famous crab and cream cheese won tons, salad and rice. We need our RICE!
The Hawaiian Phrase Of The Day Is: Hau'oli La Ho'omaika'i (How-oh-lee lah hoe-oh-my-kah-ee) or Happy Thanksgiving Day!

How Can I Resist...
I have so many GORGEOUS hand-made, one-of-a-kind items in the gallery. I could'nt resist but share a few of my favorites today!
Here you are enjoying a 3-Strand Momi Pikake Ni'ihau Shell Lei with a golden cowry closure hand made on Ni'ihau by Tutu Ane Kanahele.
Next a golden Norfolk Pine Bowl hand made in Ha'iku, Maui by Edward Perreira who finishes with a lemon grade food wax with the intention of serving in his simple, thick, heavy wood bowls. This was from a tree in UpCountry, Maui.
Finally, an extra large original hand-carved gourd by Kathleen Kam of Hilo, Hawai'i. Shs spends much of the time preparing the gourd with 4 coats of paint, and insecticide, and polyerathane before free hand carving each gourd plant. I love this "Honu 'Ohana" design!
I guess you can tell I am having lots of fun with my display today!!!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: ho'opohaku (ho-oh-poh-hah-koo) or To remain long in one place, or to stay at home
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: The fruit is already in the seed.

Back To The Drawing Board...
I can't tell you how relieved I am now that the pre-qual process is over for now! This last week was filled with last minute daily details of paperwork, numbers, more figures, and viewing homes that were really out of my price range. Funny thing is that once Duke went with me to look at houses, because he knows everybody, and everybody knows his grandma, the prices started coming down!
I can't say I haven't tried to buy a house on Maui, but I am not going to succumb to market prices when I still qualify for the very limited "affordable" homes. Back to PLAN A...save $$$! Next potential affordable project to look for: Hali'imaile development by A&B Properties later next year - hopefully! The angels know what I want, so I have to sit back and wait for the universe to prepare it for me now!
Now it's time to get ready for Thanksgiving! YUM!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: maha ka no'ono'o (mah-hah kah no-o-no-o) or relieved

I Believe In Miracles...
Its truly a miracle when you get a quick response from County of Maui workers. I must say, I am truly impressed to have gotten a very prompt email response and a follow up phone call a few days later when I notified the The Maui Bus staff that their bus stop sign had moved from the original location. After the upgraded sidewalk next to our gallery last month, the bus stop sign mysteriously moved to pick up patrons right in front of our gallery and next to the fire hydrant! Kinda pordagee!
Well after a week of dealing with loiterers, smokers, ice-cream drippers, and juveniles using my customer bench outside - for the 3 daily pick ups - I had had it! So I got proactive with my protesting self and made an attempt to communicate with the "black hole"! And it worked! The bus stop is now in a better location next to Cassanova's! It's a miracle!
Here's another miracle! A wavy sunset out of a dark, cloudy day of rain the last few days! It just suddenly appeared and I had to stop for enjoyment!

Another miracle - I got a random phone call on Monday a year after applying for an affordable house at the Waikapu Gardens project on Maui. We missed the deadline last year and I was told I would be put on a waiting list. Which meant to me "like never"! Well, Duke and I got really excited to know that the possibly is there again - all of a sudden! Kinda hits you like a flat tire - when you least expect it! We did pre-qualify, so now I will look at the houses in our range which suddenly got put back on the market and see if it's something we can truly afford to do right now. I believe in MIRACLES, and this would truly be one - to own an affordable house on Maui! If can, can, if no can, gotta wait!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: hana mana (hah-nah mah-nah) or Miracle!
Duke's Pidgeon Phrase Of The Day Is: no make 'lil dat or Please don't do that!
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: True Miracles, to me, are like divine guidance of our Father's spirit - a revelation of his spirit to my inmost soul - ever expanding and successively enlightening. But this is still limited to my capacity of receptivity!

Note To Self: Throw away 4 year old mermaid costume!
First of all - HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I hope everyone as much fun as I had today! I dressed up as a mermaid again! I've had the same old bright green patent leather mermaid costume stored away in a tuperware, that I bring out once a year. Kinda like the fake Christmas Tree! Well, its on its last leg so its a good thing Randy took a nice full body shot and put it on his blog for me! You gotta check it out!

I got to see my friends Natasha and Kevin and their new baby Tehani as they are on Maui visiting from Vancouver, Canada. It is their first time back to Maui since my dad married them on the beach in Makena four years ago! Tehani had fun with Duke's ukulele!
They came to Maui to visit and to do the Mardi Gras of the pacific in Lahaina tonight for the big costume party on Front Street! She works for M.A.C. Makeup and can change herself so dramatically! Last year they were Dog the Bounty Hunter and Beth! Hilarious and original!

No Front Street Party for me this year! I'd rather stay at home where it is safe! It's the only time I can justify eating all the candy I want while watching a scary movie!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: ho'i loa (hoe-ee low-ah) or to go or come with no thought of returning; to go permanently
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: All who see your spiritual fruits will witness your beauty and spiritual gains. May your spiritual light always shine brightly!

Journey To Hilo...

I spent two nights this last weekend in the cheap, casual comfort of Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel. When Duke's mom and I checked in, three employees recognized her right away, but stopped and said, "Wait, not Merrie Monarch yet!" Normally her and her mother always are assigned the same room every year as they are very involved with that very special hula event.

I hadn't been to Hilo for quite some time now, and unfortunately it was officially for a funeral. One of Duke's first cousins "whent make (mah-kay)". His death is still uncertain as Hawai'i doctors sent the autopsy to the mainland when they really couldn't figure it out. The 'ohana thinks something may have triggered a heart attack, yet he was only 31. We really miss him already knowing he is gone, and never had time to visit before saying "goodbye - until we meet again!". He is survived by his parents and 6 siblings and many, many cousins and nieces and nephews.

As we sat up on the hill of Alae Cemetary in Hilo, and lay him to rest, a Hawaiian hawk - I'o - soared past us, with wings that flapped slowly and gracefully.
Meanwhile, we sure ate good over there! I loved Ken's Pancake House near the hotel, if you could find parking first! Their 24 hour menu was choke full of local favorites any time of the day! Their signature syrups for the pancakes were guava, coconut, and mango. I liked the coconut best! Yum! We also had ono Hawaiian food at the lu'au service that followed the funeral, complete with Duke's uncle Kimos' fresh taro and poi from his place in Kamuela! Double Yum!

Flying home to Maui today was pretty clear. I got a great shot of Waipio Valley where my mother once worked in the taro patches when she was hapai with me. She told me the story once how she walked up the whole valley on the day before she gave birth to me! I have to visit this special place one day!
I also enjoyed this clear view of Mauna Kea with Mauna Loa and Hualalai in the distance. It was the only direct flight I could find returning to Maui and I wasn't in the mood to fly 2 hours for what takes 30 minutes or less! The Big Island is beautiful, but Maui No Ka 'Oi! We are so spoiled here!

The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: hala (hah-lah) or to pass - especially then someone dies .
Duke's Pidgeon Phrase Of The Day Is: whent make (when-nt mah-kay) or dead
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: Life is but a day's work - do it well!

Back to the routine!
There was no better feeling than finally arriving back home to Maui! Home sweet home. From the air I could see some things never changed in a week like the yellow brown hills of the West Maui Mountains near Ma'alaea and the 13 private jets parked at our small airport. But some things did already like a new subdivision near The Dunes at Maui Lani and a sneaky extention of the Kahului airport!
Well now that I am finally over my jet lag (such a non-traveller!) I can feel confident getting back to the daily kuleana. Walking the dogs, feeding the birds, watering the yard, cooking, cleaning, laundry, - oh yeah and working! Gotta start paying for my vacation splurges!
The gallery looks amazing these days! Ed Perreira hand delivered 10 new hand made wood bowls in his county pick up truck. New hand made fused glass jewelry by Makawao artist Bob Hoffmeyer not to mention the dripping selection of Ni'ihau shell leis we have too. New Anna Halldin-Maule giclee from her original oils are truly my favorite. (www.maulestudios.com) You have to come in and see what's new before it flies out the door!
Otherwise, our street is getting a new sidewalk put in this week so it has been fun to see how many Maui County workers it takes to do the job! This will be a nice upgrade for the holiday shopping season.
I have started training at the Four Seasons as a Lobby Concierge too so I have been a busy bee. Talk about maximizing potential!
The Hawaiian Word Of The Day Is: kuleana (coo-lee-ah-nah) or responsibility, right, priviledge
Rachael's Mana'o Mana: Enter into the spirit of unselfish service. This is my adventure of transforming society!
